Walking 10,000 Steps a Day - Who Recommends This?
If you spend anytime reading weight loss, exercise or fitness magazines, you may have heard this catch phrase about “10,000 steps”. The idea is that we should all be walking 10,000 steps per day for improved health and well-being. But where does this recommendation come from anyway? Let’s find out!
Firstly, the idea of walking 10,000 steps a day didn’t come out of nowhere, but its origin may surprise you. If you were thinking this is a figure the Surgeon General must have come up with, you’d be wrong. The whole notion comes from Japan.
A Doctor named Catrine Tudor-Locke first wrote about counting your steps as you walk in the book Manpo-Kei: The Art and Science of Step Counting. Dr. Tudor-Locke was writing about a fitness activity that was already popular in Japan and at the time, the number seems to have been pulled out of thin air. It is a nice round number that for most people is quite achievable.
On an average day, most people probably walk anywhere between 2000 to 3000 steps per day. So in order to hit the 10,000 steps goal, which is 5 miles, you would need to add some additional activity to your routine. This means that each day you will want to add about 30 to 60 minutes of walking to your schedule. How much time you actually end up spending depends a lot on your stride length and how fast you walk.
It just so happens that 30 to 60 minutes a day fits into the standard recommendations about exercise, so it turns out that the number of 10,000 steps is just about right for most people. Walking 10,000 steps per day should be enough activity to keep weight gain at bay, and if yo are overweight and under-active, it can also help you lose weight too.
If you want to set a goal of 10,000 steps per day, the best way to do it is to get yourself a pedometer. The Omron HJ-112 Pedometer is one of the most popular. Once you have it, just spend a week letting it record your average number of steps. Then you can set your new walking goals, with a plan to add about 500 steps per day each week.

This pedometer keeps track of total miles, total steps, aerobic steps and minutes, and calories. It is also an accurate watch. You have to remember and write down your miles each evening because this model clears its memory at midnight each day. It was easy to set up and the extr... Read more reviews | ||

| Review by S. C. Adams (Reno, NV) 2010-03-10 I bought this pedometer about 18 months ago. I've been using it regularly and have had no problems. Battery life is about 6 months or so and the batteries are easy to get. The nicest feature (to me) is that it doesn't make noise -- the mechanical pedometers click with each step, this is completely silent. It is pretty accurate -- if you ... Read more reviews | ||
